CURRENT OPENING: ASSISTANT DIRECTOR JOB DESCRIPTION – OCTOBER 2025
Job Title: Assistant Director
Reporting to: Executive Director
Hours: Flexible; Work with the supervisor and other staff to schedule work hours that meet the needs of both the employee and the organization.
Location: Black Hills; Remote with Weekly Meetings in Rapid City; Travel in the Black Hills and sometimes outside the area; Occasional overnights.
Purpose of the Position: The mission of Black Hills Clean Water Alliance, an environmental justice organization formed in 2009, is to protect our valuable resources – especially water – for future generations by preventing destructive mining in the Black Hills. The person in this position will expand the organization’s ability to meet new challenges.
Key Responsibilities and Duties: The Assistant Director is responsible for working closely with the Executive Director to successfully forward the goals of Black Hills Clean Water Alliance. The person in this position will use and develop knowledge and skills related to all aspects of the organization and its work. The person in this position will work with experienced organizers, non-profit group leaders, communications staff, and other professionals to develop new skills and increase existing skills. The employee will:
- plan, organize, and participate in events, hearings, and meetings,
- develop community and personal relationships,
- draft proposals and track grants and donations processes,
- maintain a complete, accurate record of potential and past donors, funding received, organizational evaluation data, and members,
- work with others to develop strategies and activities that further organizational goals,
- do evaluation- and funding-related research, and complete reports,
- represent the organization as a presenter and panelist, and
- attend and assist in preparing for Board of Directors meetings.
There is some weekend and evening work.
Academic, Work Skills, and Other Qualifications: A successful person in this position must have the following training, skills, and interests:
- A strong interest in protecting Black Hills water and downstream communities
- Excellent communication skills, including both written and oral communication
- Can collect information and keep consistent, accurate records
- Some experience writing grant proposals, preferably including creation of budgets and evaluation plans
- The ability to determine the accuracy of information
- Takes the initiative to support organizational growth
- Ability to relate to a variety of types of people
- Must work well independently and as a team player
- Two or more years of college preferred
- Strong computer literacy, including Microsoft Office
