Job Title: Central-Southern Black Hills Organizer

Hours: Flexible, full-time position. 

Location: Black Hills; 8 hours per week in the organization’s Rapid City office; Travel in the Black Hills; Few or no overnights.

Purpose of the Position: The Mission of Black Hills Clean Water Alliance, an environmental justice organization founded in 2009, is to protect our valuable resources – especially water – for future generations by preventing destructive mining in the Black Hills and addressing the linked issue of climate change.  The person in this position will expand the organization’s capabilities to meet new challenges in the central-southern Black Hills area. 

Key Responsibilities and Duties: Job activities will focus on community organizing, but will also include some research and other tasks as assigned.  The main task of the person in this position is taking primary responsibility for implementing an organizing plan for the central and southern Black Hills.  As part of these tasks, the employee will organize meetings, develop community and personal relationships, draft and oversee printing and distribution of written materials, do some research, and set up and participate in events.  

This position requires the ability to lift 30 pounds, drive a car, ambulate over rough ground, work at a computer, use a phone, and speak to groups of people, with or without assistance.

Academic, Work Skills, and Other Qualifications: A successful person in this position should have the following training, skills, and interests:

  • A strong interest in protecting the Black Hills
  • At least two years of experience in community organizing preferred, but will consider other types of organizational work
  • Good communication skills, including both written and oral communication
  • Ability to speak proficiently and confidently in front of groups of people from a variety of backgrounds
  • The ability to determine the accuracy of information
  • Takes the initiative to support organizational growth
  • Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Office
  • Ability to relate to a variety of types of people
  • Ability to work well independently
  • Two or more years of college preferred
