Job Title: Development Director

Hours: Flexible, full-time position. 

Location: Black Hills; 8 hours per week in the organization’s Rapid City, SD, office; Travel in the Black Hills; Few or no overnights.

Purpose of the Position:  The Mission of Black Hills Clean Water Alliance, an environmental justice organization founded in 2009, is to protect our valuable resources – especially water – for future generations by preventing destructive mining in the Black Hills and addressing the linked issue of climate change.  The person in this position will expand the organization’s capabilities to meet new challenges. 

Key Responsibilities and Duties: The Development Director is responsible for leading all development activities for Black Hills Clean Water Alliance in an effort to raise funding for organization operations and expansion.  The position develops, implements, and monitors a comprehensive fundraising plan.  Job activities will focus on organizational development and fundraising, but will also include other tasks as assigned.  The employee will:

  • Develop community, corporate, and personal relationships, 
  • Draft proposals and oversee acquisition of grants and donations, 
  • Act as primary point of contact for funding, donations, and fundraising event inquiries,
  • Organize and maintain a complete, accurate record of donors, funding received, and evaluation data, and
  • Complete funding and evaluation research.

This position requires the ability to lift 25 pounds, drive a car, work at a computer, use a phone, and speak to groups of people, with or without assistance.  Need a reliable vehicle, driver’s license, and insurance.

Academic, Work Skills, and Other Qualifications: A successful person in this position must have the following training, skills, and interests:

  • A strong interest in protecting Black Hills water and downstream communities
  • Excellent communication skills, including both written and oral communication
  • Can collect information and keep consistent, accurate records
  • Experience writing grant proposals, including creation of budgets and evaluation plans
  • The ability to determine the accuracy of information
  • Takes the initiative to support organizational growth
  • Ability to relate to a variety of types of people
  • Must work well independently and as a team player
  • Two or more years of college preferred
  • Strong computer literacy, including Microsoft Office

SOCIAL MEDIA/ORGANIZING ASSISTANT

JOB DESCRIPTION

Job Title: Social Media/Organizing Assistant
Hours: 80 hours per month; Flexible schedule.
Location: Rapid City, SD, area; At least 6 hours per week in the organization’s Rapid City office

Key Responsibilities and Duties: You will work on these and other tasks, as assigned:

Social media tasks will include:

  • strategizing with other staff, the Board of Directors, and contractors to develop Black Hills Clean Water Alliance’s social media presence,
  • draft creative content to meet regular deadlines,
  • post approved social media entries,
  • evaluate and expand the organization’s social media reach
  • create, host, and produce at least one podcast per month.

Organizing tasks will include:

  • setting up and participating in information tables, parades, and other events.

The employee will be visible to community members and should conduct themselves professionally while on the job. The use of alcohol or other non-prescribed drugs — or the misuse of prescribed drugs — while on the job or representing Black Hills Clean Water Alliance is prohibited.

Academic, Work Skills, and Other Qualifications: A successful person in this position must have the following training, skills, and interests:

  • A strong interest in protecting the Black Hills
  • Knowledge of social media platforms and creativity in their use, including most or all of the following: Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, and Spotify or other podcasting host platforms.
  • Good communication skills, including both written and oral communication
  • Basic research skills and the ability to determine the accuracy of information
  • Good organization and time management skills
  • Ability to relate to a variety of types of people
  • Ability to work well independently

We also prefer:

  • Two or more years of college
  • Communications courses
  • Podcast experience

Flexible half-time, $19,000 or more annually, depending on experience.

Reporting to: Executive Director

Location: Northern Black Hills and Rapid City.

Who We Are: Black Hills Clean Water Alliance, founded in 2009, works to protect Black Hills water from radioactive uranium mining; exploration for gold, lithium, and rare earths minerals; and disposal of mining wastes into surface or ground water. The person in this position will expand the organization’s capabilities to meet new challenges and have room for growth.

Qualifications:

  • A strong interest in protecting Black Hills water and downstream communities
  • Community organizing experience preferred, but will consider other types of organizational work
  • Good communication skills, including both written and oral communication
  • Public speaking experience
  • The ability to determine the accuracy of information
  • Ability to relate to a variety of types of people
  • Can work well independently
  • Two or more years of college preferred
  • Strong computer literacy and some social media experience preferred
