Northern Hills Forest Service Announces Solitario Zinc’s Golden Crest Exploration Drilling Project – comment requested by Sept. 2nd.

The Northern Hills Forest Service District is seeking public comments on Solitario Zinc’s proposed gold exploration project called the Golden Crest Exploration Drilling Project.  Solitario Zinc, a Colorado company, has asked to drill on the National Forest Systems land (NFS) for up to 25 sites, with numerous holes, at up to 1,600 feet depths.

This project is on the west side of Spearfish Canyon, a national scenic byway.  Potential drill sites are near Iron Creek, Little Spearfish Creek, and the Tinton Road and Timber Gulch areas.  These areas drain into Spearfish Creek and are part of a network of bicycle and other recreation trails, and may also hold endangered species and cultural resource.

Comment today on this proposed project.  In your comments, ask the Forest Service to da an “Environmental Impact Statement” (EIS), and talk about the special and unique nature of this area. If you recreate, hold ceremonies, or live in the area, say so. Be as specific as you can.  Providing evidence and documents may also prevent this project from moving forward.
