SAPA, THE PAHASAPA MOUNTAIN SNAIL, IS HAPPY AND SO ARE WE!
Thanks to everyone’s hard work and help from our local organizations, and those national groups, such as Sierra Club and Earthworks, there were about 11,000 comments filed on the proposed mineral claims withdrawal around Pactola Reservoir and Rapid Creek! We are waiting for the final number. About 85% of the comments were FOR the withdrawal.
This is a great showing of support for the protection of water, land, cultural resources, and wildlife in the Black Hills. Thank you!
What’s Next: Now the Forest Service will review the comments and decide how to proceed. There will probably be a second comment period on their final proposal in early 2024.
Click HERE to go to the Reading Room. Some of the comments are still in review, so if you don’t see yours, that might be why.
Enjoy your weekend.
PS: Did you know that Sapa, a Pahasapa Mountain snail, is a land snail, that was once widespread and abundant throughout our region but is now rare and critically imperiled? So if you see one, take a picture and share it with us. : )
