As a result of a uranium company press release issued yesterday, some area residents are drawing inaccurate conclusions about the status of a proposed radioactive uranium mining project in Fall River and Custer Counties.
Regardless of an Executive Order and press release issued by the current Administration, the proposed Dewey-Burdock uranium mining project would need to get about 10 permits in order to begin a mining process.
At this time, the required radioactive materials license expired in 2024 without meeting the licensing conditions or beginning construction. A license renewal application is being challenged in an ongoing administrative proceeding. Other permits are under appeal, subject to litigation, on hold, and/or not yet applied for.
This proposed project has to go through the full permit application processes under federal and state law. In addition to the required approvals first sought in 2007, we are not aware of any Fast-41 requirements that have been addressed. To date, all that we’ve been able to find are press releases.
